Let me set the scene. A good friend doesn’t return your voice or text messages. Your emails go unanswered. You get no response whatsoever. This comes out of the blue. You scratch your head and try to figure out what’s happened.

And now our beloved Thanksgiving Day is being turned into a bargain shopping day! In my humble opinion, that’s just plain wrong.

Several weeks ago, I watched a 60 Minutes segment entitled “Years Up.” It focused on an organization helping youth to get internships. It is very much on target with The Key Class. What struck me in this piece was this group’s emphasis on “hiring for skills and firing for behavior.”
A week or so later, I read with interest a guest blog for Extraordinary Events, written by my long-time friend, Bonnie Siegel, the founder and CEO of ASE Group, an event production firm based in Overland Park, Kan. In it, Siegel takes a slightly different approach to hiring the best and the brightest.

With the exception of your Heading (which is always at the top!), and unless otherwise noted, these sections should be listed in order of relevance to the position(s) to which you are applying.

There is a lot of buzz these days about resumes becoming endangered or extinct. LinkedIn is a major resource for recruiters. Employers are checking you out on social media. Applicants are (sometimes successfully) using video resumes or guerilla job hunting tactics. You may opt to use some of all of these avenues (in an intelligent and informed way, of course) as part of your job search. However, most of your job applications will still require the traditional application method that includes - at minimum - a resume. And even if your video resume or LinkedIn profile gets attention, you will still need a strong resume for an interviewer to use.
